Artist Bio

Byron Smith—a native of sunny Boynton Beach, Florida—is a storyteller with a brush and a bold spirit. Growing up by the coast, Byron's early years were marked by curiosity and a thirst for adventure, which ultimately led him down a less conventional path. While his peers pursued traditional academic routes, Byron set his sights on a more thrilling journey: a 10-year career in the military, where he specialized as an Aerospace Ground Equipment Maintainer. His service took him across the globe—from the romantic landscapes of Italy and Germany to the vibrant cultures of South Korea and beyond. These experiences painted the backdrop of a global perspective that now infuses his art with a rich tapestry of inspiration.

A life-changing moment came during a candid phone call with his uncle, where Byron voiced a yearning for something deeper than the routine of military life. Shortly after, a serendipitous encounter at a used bookstore brought him face-to-face with Drawing on The Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. Immersed in its pages while stationed in Djibouti, Africa, Byron discovered the transformative power of art. It wasn’t just a hobby—it was a calling. This spark ignited a fire within him, leading him to take a leap of faith and transition from military life to the vibrant world of art.

Determined to master his craft, Byron enrolled at the prestigious School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York, diving headfirst into a dynamic range of mediums—from screen printing and digital art to video and audio creations. But it was painting that captured his heart. The magic of turning a blank canvas into a vivid, living story became his ultimate passion. He continued to refine his artistry at Brooklyn College, earning his Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art, with a particular focus on printmaking and oil painting.

Byron’s artistic journey has already seen impressive milestones. His work has been showcased in group exhibitions such as At the Margins at the SVA Flatiron Gallery (2020) and In & Out of Time at the SVA Chelsea Gallery (2021). His talent also took him overseas, where he featured in the Future Stars Exhibition at The Holy Art Gallery in London (2023). Most recently, he unveiled his creations in the Studio Art Final MFA Exhibition at Brooklyn College (2024).

As Byron gears up for his first solo exhibition and prestigious artist residencies, he is a creator fueled by an unstoppable drive to explore, innovate, and inspire. With every stroke of his brush, Byron Smith invites audiences into a world of imagination and emotion, where his boundless energy and vision promise to leave an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene. The adventure continues, and it’s only just beginning.
